In Kurgan 2, we finished cleaning the SE quadrant (Locus 3) for photographs. The clay around the capstone is visible in both the E and W sections. We decided to extend the trench 0.5 m to the north, making its dimensions: 12.5 m E-W and 13.0 m N-S. Lilit drew the E-W section in Locus 3 today. At the end of the day, we photographed the southern half of Kurgan 2.
In Kurgan 3, we finished cleaning the stones in the SW quadrant and photographed them. The soil in Locus 1 (the topsoil/overburden) is a dark brown clay loam (not very easy to trowel!). Near the center in the SW quadrant, the rocks covering the kurgan mound are more tightly and carefully arranged. They also appear to be a different kind of rock than those further from the center, they are more rounded in shape and more granular. The rocks away from the center are angular and smooth.
