Today we worked in both WSDA1 and WSDB again. In WSDB, we continued to take down the wash layer in Locus 28, the 4th extension toward the NW (out to 10 m). There were a lot of ceramic sherds found in this locus, some of which were finely decorated. They appear to be both LBA and Iron III. The soil was rich, dark and loamy. Upon taking the locus down, we uncovered a number of rocks invisible from the surface, but they all appear to have fallen, unfortunately. If we decide to bring the entire trench to the level of the white, clayey, hard matrix found at the bottom extent of Locus 26, we\'ll have to break a lot of rocks in the N corner. We\'ll have to evaluate on Monday.
In WSDB, we also removed a few rocks that appeared to have fallen onto the N corner of the burial area, and uncovered what might have been its original border. We also cleaned all of former Locus 26 (now 36) and took a photo for recordkeeping purposes. In the new Locus 36, there is a \"carpet\" of small (6-10 cm diam) rocks that is unusual. It might be an area of fall, but they are embedded in the hard, white, clayey matrix. So we\'ll have to clean, photo a little better, and remove to see what is going on.
In WSDA1, we closed Loci 44 and 45, and made a new locus (47) of 1 m from the SW wall of the room, to capture the very clayey matrix along that wall. We\'re trying to bound the decomposing bedrock, but along that wall, it is proving elusive. We will have to dig again on Monday. We also will need to dig in the E corner, where we finished taking down Locus 26 and have yet to dig and screen that area.
