Today was a big day (and no rain!) - we totally finished WSDA1 and WSDA2. We dug down to sterile clay in the N corner of WSDA2, the sterile clay floor prep in the E corner of WSDA2 and all along its shared baulk with WSDA1. In WSDA1, we dug to the sterile clay floor prep along the baulk, then to a ton of bedrock in the middle, and along the SW baulk, we went about 30 - 40 cm down below the wall before calling it quits. There might still be some small amount of material to recover, but the deeper we went, the less there seemed to be (as we expected). So to dig further seemed pointless. Took final photos of the entire room.
In WSDB, we broke 9 boulders in the NW area, and then dug down the wash layers to roughly the level of the rest of the room (i.e. the level of Locus 36, the very hard, white clayey matrix). At the bottom of the wash locus (which we closed), we\\\'re reaching a remarkably colorful soil matrix that appears to include lenses of burned material and clay. We found what might be a hearth in situ, so we closed the part that we found and will have to trowel tomorrow.
Tomorrow, in fact, we\\\'ll have to trowel a lot of the trench, including Locus 36. That will likely slow work down, but unless something strange happens (another surprise burial!?), we should be able to finish at least to the floor by the end of the week, and perhaps to dig below it and finish the trench.
