7/22/2013
Workers today: Artur (for Arman), Roman, Roland, Grikor, Karlos, Sanvel. Grikor had to leave before lunch to take care of a cow with a broken leg. In the afternoon, around 3, the wind became too bad, so we moved from T35 to T31.
Open loci include:
15 – the surface on the W side of the trench
17 – space within the rock semi-circle on baulk; extends into trench (elevated soil)
19 – triangle locus
23 – outside of locus 17, surface.
21 – below locus 14; eastern part of the trench, lots of stones.
Locus 24 may be the same surface as locus 18.
Locus 25 is below locus 20.
Additional finds from locus 16, came from above the stone surface (loc. 31).
The sherd we recovered from locus 16 today lay immediately upon the stone floor (Locus 16, Ceramics, bag 2).
Locus 24 top elevation (& locus 23 top elevation): 2295.02
Locus 20 bottom elevation: 2294.626
I suspect the floor (loc. 23) may actually be 2 floors—at times the dark, charcoal filled soil below seems like a thin film, below which there is more floor. This was confirmed by the profiles both in the baulk and below the stones (loc.31). A drawing of this profile is in the journal entry for 7/22/2013.
T35.23.C14.01 was collected from this dark soil between floors at an elevation of 2294.837.
In the profile of soil, under the semicircle (loc. 28), there is first a dark layer (there was a light floor next to the stones), followed by another light floor, followed by another dark layer. In the new N side, it is floor, followed by dark, followed by floor.
We tried to find the second floor across the surface, where we had not already lost it.
Elevations
Locus 31 – Stone floor: 2294.928
Locus 28 – stone semi-circle: 2294.978
Locus 26 – top of wall: 2295.562
Locus 27 – top of wall: 2295.232
We began shoveling locus 25. When we reached a rise in density of cultural objects, and a soil change, we changed locus to locus 29.
T25.29.C14.01 – was found right at the top of locus 29, at elev: 2294.412
T35.25.L.01
2294.528; 22 cm (from E baulk) x 335 (from S baulk)
T35.25.C14.01
Elev: 2294.492; 15 cm (from E) x 375 cm (from S)
The dimensions of locus 24 are approximately 80 cm x 240 cm.
Locus 17 has a 75 cm diameter.
Elevations at NW corner of baulk (from d5):
Top of floor 1: 2294.912
Bottom of floor 1: 2294.872
Top of floor 2: 2294.842
Bottom of floor 2: 2294.722
Locus 30 is half of a pit in locus 24, at an elevation of 2294.92; dimensions of 20 cm x 13 cm (likely diameter was 20 cm); located 80-85 cm from N baulk x 65 cm from the E edge of locus 26.
There is another flat stone at the W limit of locus 24, that could conceivably have been part of locus 31.
Top elevation locus 31: 2294.928
140 cm x 80 cm (at widest visible point).
The floor (loc. 24?) can be clearly seen appearing in the N baulk.
Loci 23 and 24 are likely a single surface, with 28 and 31 set into it.
When we complete locus 24, we will take elevations for the bottom of the surface across its full extent (350 cm x about 150 cm) and top elevations from the baulk and stones.
T31. Locus 112 top elevations:
N: 2283.188
C: 2283.153
S: 2283.072
We began, after elevations, by cleaning the small stones surrounding the large stone wall. These finds are in locus 111, as part of the slope.
