Narrative

Today was cool and cloudy. We created an extension to WSDB that will need to be measured. For now, the topsoil and wash layers are Locus 43, and the measurements are 5.0 x 1.0 m. We created it to follow Locus 29, the wall that extends toward the west from the passageway, and to see what the wall does. We found that the preservation of the wall is poor, that just to the west of the current 4 m SW baulk, there is a large stone (or stones) missing from the top course. After that gap, however, the wall does appear to continue for approximately 5 m, raising the question of whether the exit in the SW baulk of WSDB is in fact an exit or another passage.

In the main section of WSDB, we continued to dig the passageway (locus 42) and bring it to the level of Locus 36 (the hard, white, clayey matrix). We also revealed more of a line of stones that runs from the SW wall toward the NE baulk and seems to separate the area with the hearth pieces from the area with the clayey matrix. The line has two courses near the SW wall, but toward the NE baulk, it has two rows next to each other, and possibly only one course (we\\\'ll have to dig a little more tomorrow).

With respect to Locus 41, the area with the hearth pieces and the rock formations, we need to decide whether the way that we covered it today should last until we are able to open the entire room (i.e. to cover until we come another year), or whether we want to remove the hearth pieces. In any case, we can dig more in WSDB and try to understand the relationship between the various areas, even if we leave the hearth covered for another year.
