Today Levon and Maureen worked with me at Kurgan 2. It rained very hard last night, and this morning there was a lot of water pooled on the plastic covering the chambers. The skeletons in both chambers were pretty much dry, but the matrix was very wet and we had to wait a bit for it to dry before beginning our work.
This morning, Lilit drew the situation in the northern part of the central chamber. After she finished, we began to remove the animal bones from Locus 102. The sheep/goat legs continued into an innominate that we partially removed (but the rest of it continued under the pedastaled stones). The medium mammal vertebrae and ribs continue down below the level we’ve excavated, so we left some of them in situ till we get down further. We removed the rocks that we thought were a low wall (Locus 39). The rocks are probably just fall or were placed in there for some reason. They definitely were over the first skeleton (Locus 27) and there is dirt underneath them. Once the rocks were removed, we finished removing Locus 27. Near the NE shoulder of Locus 33, we found a large mammal scapula, but it was very fragile. In the afternoon we removed Locus 33 and continued to come down in Locus 104.
In the western chamber, in Locus 109, we have uncovered an innominate, just north of the upright legs, which connects to the articulated vertebrae. At the end of the day, we cleaned and photographed the situation in the entire chamber, but the light was not good and part of the unit was in deep shadow. We will photograph it again in the morning when the light is better.
