Today's work exposed the LB wall turn and or corner (!) in the SW trench corner and generally improved our understanding of the architectural plan in the operation. We continued to pull wall fall throughout AB4 and descend in different portions of the trench.
In locus 30, at the western trench boundary, we descended to a bedrock bench approximately 25cm below the prior base of excavation. EB pottery dominated here, suggesting significant upslope occupation. The bedrock appears to have been prepared for LB wall erection, so we will push east until the bedrock meets our emerging wall portion.
In locus 35, opened yesterday, we have completely exposed the wall turn and corner that has been anticipated. There are many lines of stones here, so it is difficult to assert at present if there is one wall line, or a double faced wall with fill at the corner. Early estimates measure the W-E wall portion at 6m and the N-S portion at 3 (the entire N-S length of the operation). Based on the locus 3 stone floor, the wall may be as tall as 1.5m at the back (W) of the trench and room.
We also opened locus 36 today, a thin W-E area between the locus 4 wall and the trench boundary along the southern edge of the operation. This work is defining and cleaning our wall segments outside the room as we descend further inside.
An end of day tour was given, as Ian Lindsay and Elizabeth joined us at 3:30.
