Work in AB4 was limited by extensive wind today, and mapping was prevented by a data collector malfunction, but downward progress was achieved in both the locus 40/43 SW trench extension and the locus 42/44 trench center room excavation.
In the SW trench extension, we exposed a new line of wall stones that stretch from the SW "corner" stones west into the western trench baulk and possibly south as well. Thus, at least 3, and likely 4, walls are visible in this portion of the operation. Locus 43 represents the second matrix identified in this small extension area. We continue to clean rocks and remove soil here.
In the center of western AB4, our descent in locus 42 (within the locus 41 circular stone feature) proceeded to an elevation equal to that of the locus 34 cultural fill without any sign of burial activity or other deposits. We therefore bisected the feature, removing half of the stones, and are bringing this area, the western half of the feature area, level with the base of locus 42 as well. Once the rocks were extracted, the loamy silt feel became rather easy to dig and free of stones, just like the locus 42 matrix.
