Narrative

Today's survey began by recording the northernmost extent of the KVAS expedition thus far. We walked a transect up through and above the patchy forest area. The abundant tree furrows marked the most prominent find in this region. At least in my transect, there was no evidence of cultural material (burial architecture) in view. From here, we walked our next transect to the east, following the natural contours of the mountain. With the exception of one springhead there was not much of interest in this region. In our ninth transect brought us down south into the lowlands of the area all the way to the highway. We noted a few kurgans in the area, which is an interesting contrast to the many we have found situated in higher contexts. Perhaps these kurgans and cromlechs belonged to a different period where alternative visibility to neighboring sites was prioritized. Our last transect of the day which ran from the highway north, into the barley fields, proved to be quite difficult. With almost no visibility of the ground surface it was near impossible to record any (if there were) features. The presence of some stones in those areas could, perhaps, be indicative of architecture; however, there was not enough for formal speculation.
