Today Operation 03 at Aparani Berd made considerable headway, completing locus 02 and beginning locus 03. Locus 02, characterized by its loose, dark ashy matrix, revealed the presence of a potential wall in the southwest portion of the trench. We are hopeful that this series of large stones (~25 cm) will be followed by additional courses in below loci. Upon completely locus 02, we began excavating locus 03, which was almost completely void of cultural material (bone, stone, and obsidian). The soil matrix of this locus was incredibly carbonized. It was black in color, and a combination of fine grained clasts and clumps of what appeared to be burnt clay -- chunks of a very compact and dense material. We are hopeful that this constitutes a burn layer, sealing in an context of sound integrity. Ideally, below this loci we will find evidence of some sort of destruction or abandonment event. We hope to gain better clarity on the period and architecture of this area upon our further excavation next week.
