Today we focused on two areas of the trench. For the first half of the day I concentrated on locus 9, the rocky wash deposit in the southward extension of the trench, beneath the sod. In doing so, we exposed one more stone of the lower wall, just adjacent to the southern baulk. We also recovered several small finds, most notably a flint sickle (EB). After bringing this area nearly to the level of locus 06, attention turned to the floor associated with the lower wall, created as locus 11. Locus 11 is a packed clay, speckled in places with charcoal. In the center, at the end of the day, I noticed an exceedingly packed clay matrix, that may turn into a feature of some sort (associated with burning?). We are excavating locus 11 only by trowel. Material densities seem a bit lower than upper loci, especially ceramics (still much bone). I created loci for the two walls inside the room, the northern wall (12) and the eastern wall (13). I am beginning to worry that we will not finish the trench by the end of the season.
