Narrative

I decided to close locus 11 today to control for materials as we work our way though the thick cultural deposit that represents, I suspect, multiple reflooring. Created 2 new loci. One is locus 14, on the northern side of what was locus 11, in order to capture the soft, powdery clay encountered yesterday. I suspect that this is some sort of animal intrusion, given the tunnel like burrow that extends from this area to the south, it appears. ceramic densities were quite low in locus 14, bone a bit higher. We removed 4 large fallen stones from this locus. The locus appears to have bottomed out on bedrock, though will know better once we excavate the remainder of the interior. A ceramic base (?) and associated body sherds were encountered at the very bottom of the locus, which is peculiar. Covered it back up after photographing and will remove only after seeing if it continues under the area of locus 15. In excavating locus 14, we exposed 2 additional courses of the wall, locus 13, the bottom of which I think was a foundation. Amy C. and I also created locus 15 today, which covers the remainder of what was locus 11. We began digging it only by trowel, but then turned to light shoveling and screening, once it became clear how deep this cultural deposit is. Charcoal sample collected from locus 14.
