Narrative

Today was the last day of excavations in Aparani Berd 01. We spent part of our energies completing the interior of the room, to bedrock. This entitled closing locus 19 and opening locus 21, a subfloor deposit of tan and orangish clay and silt, in some areas extremely packed above the bedrock. The bottom of 21 was quite rocky, and I think many of the stones were placed in to level the floor. It was from this locus that we collected the flat ceramic object (plate?) on the northern end of the room, atop the bedrock (soil sample taken from beneath this "plate"). As for small finds, one ceramic wheel from 21. I also continued in locus 10, along the north. This locus was originally created to capture splotches of packed orange clay, but as explained in previous journal, those deposits turned out to be extremely ephemeral (though one soil sample was taken of it today), and so the locus turned into a cleaning locus of the remaining silt wash overburden above a tab, packed, floor like matrix. From this locus was also recovered another ceramic wheel. In the course of excavating locus 10, I exposed what appears to be another stone of the scantly preserved northern upper wall. It's possible that some stones of this wall are a but further north of the operation. After completing locus 10, I created locus 23 in this area to capture the cultural deposit below. This area was not taken to bedrock because of insufficient time. And finally, today we worked in the southeastern area of the trench, clearing the stones of the wall of locus 13. This area was also not taken to bedrock, but only excavated sufficiently to prepare the wall for Lilit's architectural drawing. Note that there was one error in sorting material today. A worker accidentally put some ceramic from locus 21 into the locus 10 ceramic bag. So that bag is compromised. A good C14 sample collected from locus 21.
