Narrative

Today we closed out the last of the trenchettes (T37N) and expanded our operations in T37J. We extended this 1x1m unit 3 meters south and 3 meters west. In the test trench we exposed what appeared to be a wall and a remarkably high concentration of pottery. This, along with the considerably dark coloring of the soil stood in stark contrast to the finds of the other units. Accordingly, we deemed it fit for a more extensive operation (T 38). We opted to move south and west due to the direction of the "wall" and appearance of a terrace-like plateau just to the south of the unit. We wanted to see if there was a terrace wall or cultural feature catching EB materials in this region.

Most of the day, accordingly, was spent clearing the topsoil of this new unit. By the end of the day in our second locus we had exposed a number of stones in a curvilinear arrangement as well as an adjacent east-west line of stones in the southeast part of the unit. While the relationship between these two potential walls (collectively referred to as T38.03) is unclear at this moment in time, it is evident that cultural materials are in a greater concentration west of the architecture. We found a great number of ceramic sherds that are almost exclusively EB. Though there were also large stones in the western part of the trench, the lack of organization among them suggests that they were either tumble or collapse.

Tomorrow we will continue to articulate the stones and see if there is an associated surface with this architecture and/or in situ pottery. It is possible that we will extend the unit further to try and clarify the orientation and configuration of this architecture.
