Today on the western slope of Gegharot we continued the T38 expansion to a 10x9m unit. Specifically, we added a meter to the eastern edge in light of locus 14, the north-south terrace wall discovered on July 7th. Hopefully with this extension we will be able to articulate the edge or trace the continuation of the context and/or quite possibly find bedrock in the higher elevations of the trench (known from test trenches D and H). So far the density of cultural materials has slowed considerably. Most of the materials, however, are still EB. Perhaps the alluvial flow of materials known from previous contexts preceded the terracing wall. If not, it seems materials are related to the architectural units previously exposed and simply remain concentrated west of the wall.
In lieu of yesterday's ran, the other task of the day involved cleaning the trench. Unsurprisingly, we discovered that wall (locus) 10 appears to continue north and east. Given the configuration and orientation of the architecture it seems unlikely that this architectural construction is concurrent with locus 14.
When we resume on monday we will continue the process of bringing the extension to meet the elevation of the rest of the unit. Upon the completion of this task we will begin our excavations in search of in situ contexts.
