Today we started out by examining the settlement (Ar/Ar.EF16.01) I'd identified in the satellite imagery yesterday. It turned out to be very interesting - we estimated it covers about 4 hectares, and it consists of multiple room blocks that may in fact be enclosed by an external wall. To the south especially the wall seemed significant and had these paved outcrops that could potentially have served to fortify a mudbrick wall. We took many photos. We also collected over one large bag of sherds, and could have collected more but we stopped collecting nondiagnostic and went for the rimsherds. We also found a small piece of blue glass.
After exploring the settlement for a little over an hour, we began our transect 46 from it and walked north toward Aparan. 46 took me about an hour to get from 444835 4489900 to 444835 4492105. The transect marched past one element of isolated architecture (Ar/Ar.EF16.02) across the streamlet gorge from the settlement and a bunch of clearance walls. In fact, clearance walls were pretty much all I recorded all afternoon; interestingly, however, at least two and possibly three were either built alongside or directly on top of water courses, making me wonder whether in this boggy area south of Aparan if they served two purposes: drainage as well as rock storage. I walked transect 47 from 444685 4492100 to 444685 4489900 and again only found clearance walls. After 47, the rest of the team walked 48 while Samvel and I drove to find them at the other end.
