Narrative

We began our morning by visiting a site Elizabeth had identified through the Pleiades satellite imagery as a potential settlement, now recorded as Aparan Settlement 01. The site turned out to be an impressive 4 ha in size, featuring numerous blocks of semi-subterranean building foundations and high frequencies of surface materials eroding out of mechanized soil cuts and stream banks. (The site is located on the right bank of a minor Kasakh tributary flowing W to E.) Based on the blue glass handle we recovered, as well as other "late" looking pottery, this is likely a Medieval, or late Medieval site. We used a roundabout access road today, but there appears to be a more convenient access route from a road that begins further south on the M3.

Following our surface collections and photography of Aparan Settlement 01, we walked three N-S transects connecting this new area with our Nigavan survey quadrant to the north. This new area will be included in the Aparan quadrant like the areas northeast of Aparan. I encountered mostly fields and clearance evidence here, except for a few newer, multi-course walls (Aparan AR 23) and a small set of possible room or corrals (Aparan AR 22). This was similar to the results of other survey walkers.
