Narrative

Severe allergies today. Miserable. Here's the lowdown:
Operation 10: This trench continues to confound me. We spent yesterday and today digging in search of the architecture. Have removed several stones from the area of locus 5, now expanded, and now seem to have two walls. One is the 2-course, 2-row wall that projects from the western baulk into the trench. It is absolutely unclear why this wall "ends" so abruptly. This wall corresponds stratigraphically with the floor of locus 4, where we collected a sizable charcoal sample. A second line of stones runs west to east (roughly) toward the northern end of the trench and was the guiding logic behind the original placement of the trench. In removing stones from the area of locus 5, we exposed a second course roughly beneath that which was visible on the surface. This course sits above a level of burnt earth that may be the same "event" as the burnt earth of locus 4. This would mean that that rather slapdash construction is later than the wall of 2 courses/2 rows (need to give locus number tomorrow). But it is not at all clear what these various walls belong to. One appears to be an internal wall of some sort, the other a citadel/terrace/enclosure? Expanding the trench is the only way to gain some clarity and there's not time for that this year.

In operation 14, we continue to clean and expose the double-faced wall that bisects the trench. Closed locus 7 and created locus 8 to attend to the area to the north of the wall and west of the bedrock outcrop.
