The day was predominately consumed by the addition of a two meter extension to the north of T38. Through excavations in this area we hope to gain some clarity about the extent and orientation of walls (loci) 9 and 15. Though two meters will likely not capture the entirety of locus 15, given the superior state of preservation in the northern corner we hope that the extension will reveal more about architectural details -- i.e. the number of courses, thickness, etc. With respect to locus 9, it seems likely that we will uncover the northwest curve of the wall. While the westernmost part of the structure appears to have eroded, by uncovering as much of the unit as possible we can predict what the overall diameter and orientation would likely have been. Another crucial determinant in our decision to expand was the presence of what appears to be a capstone in locus 18, about 20cm west of locus 15 in close proximity to the already exposed human remains. Given the lack of EB burials at Gegharot, the sheer possibility of a tomb was reason unto itself for extension.
In the other half of the trench we are continuing the indefinite cleaning process. Today we focused on removed locus 12, collapse from locus 15 situated in close proximity to locus 10. We will continue our work in this area as well as in locus 13 tomorrow.
