Our survey work today consisted of the re-identification of the EB site at Tsilkar and some panoramic drone and conventional photography from atop the Aragatsotn/Lori mountain pass just west of Tsilkar. The site sits just northwest of the main village, on a modest bench halfway up the Pambak slope. Drainages (full of EB pottery) flank it on both sides. West of the western drainage, the site appears to continue a bit, up to a modern or Medieval cemetery, based on surface collections. Several wall portions are visible in the portion of the site immediately facing the gorge to the southwest, an erosion cut, essentially. A significant portion of the sandy, decomposing-granite-based site has now eroded into the immediate gorge/drainages. We took drone images and photography, along with our surface collections.
The rest of the day was spent observing and assisting Gabby's work at Gegharot. The EB "stone box" tomb there is quite impressive, with several individuals apparently buried OUTSIDE the tomb with complete vessels, etc. The rest of the trench appears to be filled with curvilinear and linear EB architecture. Should be interesting to see whether that also turns out to be burial architecture, or if it marks dwellings, on top of which the later tomb was installed.
