Narrative

I worked in the field until lunch today and then worked from home in order to let Arsho go with the survey team to drone Kuchak I. In the morning, we first visited Kuchak I, where we identified the settlement and fortress areas of the site, but not the cemetery, which we later learned lies north of the site. There is excellent preservation of architecture there, despite significant modern disturbance and even, in summer, direct human occupation. We also examined a road cut that extends between Vardenis and Yeghipatrush, but found little in terms of diagnostic or high volume material. We then headed south to the site of Aparan II, on the reservoir bank, and walked that fortress, again not identifying the burials, which are allegedley homgenized and mostly covered by the reservoir waters. Both sites pose fantastic propsects for both simple stratigarphic tracking and large scale excavtion. According to Ruben, Kasakh and Zovuni are the two villages now submerged in the Aparan Reservoir (construction 1962-67), with Kasakh occupying the space just south of today’s Kuchak I (right bank of Kasakh) and Zovuni due east of Kuchak (left bank of Kasakh). After lunch we completed two drone transects of Kuchak I before rain ended our day slightly early.
