Narrative

While the weather was threatening for most of today, we managed to both locate the Kuchak I cemetery north and northwest of the fortress and settlement. Walking north from the site, along the ridge fingers just west of the road, we began to encounter linear architectural formations and then archaeological trenches belonging to previous excavations by Levon Petrosyan. Interestingly, the linear formation we had seen previously appeared, in the context of actual excavations, to constitute the external burial architecture, within which were positioned cists with capstones. Few cromlechs were visible. Thus, this LB/I1 cemetery appears to have significantly different architecture from the cemetery associated with Aparani Berd, where cromlechs predominate. The necropolis stretched less than 200 m W from the Vardenis-Kasakh road and less than 2 km north from Kuchak I fortress north toward Vardenis.

After locating the cemetery we completed our aerial data collection over the fortress and settlement, after which rain forced us to complete our day slightly earlier.
