Today was our second day at Mirak Operation 01. I photographed the trench at the beginning as the bottom of Locus 04 from the previous day. We began digging, taking the trench down another 10cm, which I called Locus 05. While the only noticeable soil change in Locus 05 was a lessening again of the rocks present throughout previous loci, the first noticeable soil change came at the bottom of this locus at a depth of 126cm from our datum point. The soil across the trench became a lighter soft silty clay, mostly without any of the rock inclusions previously noted. A few small pieces of debitage came out of this level. Locus 06 was solidly of this new more clay-like soil type. Also, in the locus there were some larger flat rocks present in the North corner that we left in place as we cleaned around them. More debitage, in very small pieces, was also present in this locus. We measured and photographed this level and proceeded to descend another 10cm and call it Locus 07. This level was much the same as the previous we removed two flat tuf stones from the north corner. This might have been a mistake as there appeared to be more rocks underneath. I plan on leaving in the rest of the rocks in this corner as we descend further as well as any other rocks that might begin to appear in the trench. Locus 07 contained larger pieces of obsidian, one of which Karen identified as a scraper. Two of our driver's friends stopped by and asked about our work and if we had gold and where burials were nearby, I remained quiet but one had a pick axe in hand. I have a slight concern that they plan on digging in order to find non-existent treasures. They also told me that they have been quarrying tuf from the area for several decades. As we were returning to work from lunch we were rained out and although we tried to wait out the rain it was persistent and we were unable to continue digging. While my workers are learning and self motivated, Narek felt ill in the morning and slept the first hour. Also a broken wheelbarrow and only two shovels have slowed down our work quite a bit. despite this I felt, had it not been for the rain we would have been able to descend another 30 cm in addition to our 30 cm from the morning. Hopefully tomorrow we can do just that and find either bedrock or a habitation surface.
