Narrative

Today we dug Mirak Operation 01 to bedrock. Picking up where we left off yesterday, when we were rained out, we began digging down another 10cm calling it locus 08. This locus consisted of a dark brown silty/clay soil. There were quite a few rock inclusions in this locus that were both tuf and basalt. The NE side had many smaller rocks that we cleaned around until we were certain that they were not nest to or sitting on any other rocks before I decided that they could be removed as they were just suspended in the soil. At this point I decided to measure down at the NE side to see when the first real soil change occurs and it is 45 cm down from the top of the trench. With only a few pieces of obsidian as materials and no real soil change we took the trench down another 10 cm calling it Locus 09. This is where things changed a bit. We cleaned carefully around a few more small stones before deciding they could come out. Along the NW side of the trench we saw some black emergins in chunks which I took for charcoal at first but then realized was eroding tuf - what turned out to be the first evidence that we were almost to the bedrock. Along the NW side there was quite a bit of deteriorating tuf. And more interestingly in the N corner in a small 70cmX15cm area there was some emerging white clay. We cleaned and measured and photographed the trench. Then I decided to take down the small area of white clay as Locus 10 on its own. We took it down about 10-15cm before hitting eroding tuf and discovering that we had reached bedrock. Not finding any materials in the area, we took down the rest of the trench to the same level and hit bedrock, cleaning it. We measured and photographed. I didn't have section drawing paper so that will take place tomorrow. Next we walked up into the fortress and measured out a trench on a lower west terrace above the wall in a dry spot of the terrace. It is called Operation 02. It is a N/S axis trench, 4m X 4m. Ian and Alan came and approved of my finishing up Operation 01 and the location of OP 02. We took depths of the trench from a datum less than a meter north of the trench. Two men came from Mirak and said that there was a modern cemetary where we were digging. indicating a few (perhaps four piles of rocks) we assured them they would remain undisturbed and they remained satisfied. Before we could remove the topsoil we were hailed out around 15:30. It was decided in the evening that Operation 02 would instead start along the corner of the room further NW in the fortress where a wall corner and room depression are evident. This trench should be at least two meters within each wall and about half a meter out of the walls - something like a 3m X 3m. Tomorrow we will place this trench and begin digging. Also I will draw the section of the NE wall of Mirak Operation 01.
