Narrative

Today began at the newly opened trenches at Mirak. Karen and I returned to the site Ar/Mi.CS17.02 and added photos. I'm beginning to doubt it's a kurgan, possibly just a cromlech that was heavily disturbed during soil removal for the modern path. Still, the medieval pottery found there is terrific and seems to be concurrent with the nearby medieval church. Our next main task was another transect westward from the northwestern bank of the Mirak reservoir. We came upon four kurgans but it was difficult to say whether or not they comprised a true cluster, as there were about spaced about 100 meters apart. We continued the transect and picked up 2 more kurgans right up to the edge of Rya Taza. Based on what's been noted in ArcGIS I am curious to continue transects between the western edge of Rya Taza and Kaniashir / Vardablur. It would be great to unveil a general arc of burial clusters from Lusagyugh / Mirak up to the beginning of the Tsaghkahovit Plain. This consistency would certainly say something about the greater mortuary landscape and the way space is interpreted between hillforts in this region.

The next major task was a second transect running from the eastern shore of the Mirak reservoir for about 1km back towards the Mirak hillfort. Aside from a couple of negligible ceramic scatters (1 piece) there was nothing notable about this section.
