Narrative

Today we laid in Salpi's second trench (again) at the eastern end of the Mirak Fortress citadel. After that work was finished, we walked transects between Mirak and Ria Taza, collecting data to the northern extent of the survey area which we will walk systematically.

Mirak Operation 02 was laid in to catch the corner of a fortress room defined by substantial stone surface architecture. As a 3 x 3, it will likely need to be expanded, but we will first attempt to confirm that we are working within a room context.

Transects west and east of Mirak recorded a great deal of hydrological infrastructure and a new kurgan cluster of rather large and impressive tumuli northeast of the Mirak Reservoir. These are the northernmost ancient burials in the survey area. Some ranged over 10m in diameter and the closest fortress to them is Mirak.

A later transect east of Mirak produced a few pieces of potential EB pottery in/near a barley field. Should be interesting to watch how and if this collection develops into something more substantial.
