Narrative

Today Lori spent almost two hours at my trench helping me to decide how to approach it next. I had the boys clean inside the room as I drew a scale version of the trench and took photographs of each existing Locus to date. Their work revealed a carpet of rocks each sitting on more rocks making it nearly impossible to identify what to remove. Everything that was removed from this carpet of rocks remains in Locus 01 as we have not arrived at a soil different from the topsoil due to the rocks. We did find what I suspect is part of an Iron nail just inside the wall along the NE side of the trench. On the NW side of the trench we closed Locus 03 and defined Locus 04 as the white clay directly beneath Locus 03. This Locus 04 was without any materials and revealed quite a bit more bedrock underneath. It was necessary to dig quite a bit deeper in the W corner to arrive at this new Locus 04. Intruding into Locus 03 and 04 is Locus 05 which was created to deal with an area of wall collapse which I partially removed today and I will finish removing tomorrow. Locus 05 consists of 3 large stones one of which appears very faced on two sides and may have tumbled off what I suspect is the corner of our wall (as it sits directly next to it and is faced on two adjacent sides). All three of these large stones and small stones around them where floating and not sitting on any other rocks, like the wall next to them. Nor were these stones in any kind of true alignment and they had no face on either side. While the area might be part of some later architecture, it is dubious that this is the case and it was necessary to remove these stones in order to reveal the wall that is our focus. While the materials that emerged from Locus 05 were at the same soil type and depth as Locus 03, they are in a separate Locus 05 to account for any sort of later occupation they may have been a part of. Locus 05 materials included a small find of a ceramic disk. Tomorrow I plan to taking down the rest of these floating stones and take locus 05 down to the level of Locus 04 on the NW side of the trench. Additionally I am hoping to expand to seek further understanding and direction on the inside of the room.
