Happy Hump Day!
This morning, Alan, Ian, Karen, and I did a transect to the north of Chknagh in the fields abutting the mountains. It was long, about 2 km, but we came across a very intriguing settlement site on a low slope coming westward off the mountains. There were no surface scatters observable but we did note a dense collection of potential walls and other clustered architecture. This site is about 1 km north of the terraced site at Chknagh we looked at the day before, so they are most likely not contiguous but, I think, could very possibly be occupied simultaneously, given how close they are. I found an obsidian scatter in a plowed field halfway between both sites, which raises questions about the activity that had possibly taken place in the middle ground between them. The entire area is on a gradual slope, so it could very well have drained from the original site area to where I discovered them.
The second half of the day was spent documenting the church area in Chknagh and a clearly visible fortified structure in Vardenis. The site at Vardenis had multiple similarities with Aparani Berd, albeit smaller in scale. Rooms were clearly visible as well as the remnants of cyclopean walls and a rampart coming up from Vardenis village into the site. Would love to get a drone out here to get a much clearer image of what is going on here.
