Narrative

The majority of today's work consisted of a lengthy trek up the mountain above Chknagh throughout Horomi Paler, above the Pupuyi Pal, to investigate the possibility of a fortress constructed within the prominent rock faces. We discovered at least three walls, two of which were completely destroyed and could easily be mistaken as scree, as well as a trio of potential cist burials abutting a rock face on the northern face of the outcrop. In this area we picked up some small ceramic scatters but the period is unclear. We trekked around the greater ridge in a southwesterly direction and picked up a single sherd that Karen identified as a medieval amphora.

The purpose of this "fortress" is very interesting to me as its position, built within the rocks, seems not only precarious as to its construction but the strategy here is unclear. The more clearly defined hill forts in the surrounding area are at a much lower elevation, with easy access to the plain level, so the primary function here must have been an observational outpost. However, we asked questions regarding its relationship to the hill forts to the north, in the direction Aparani Berd, because it is blocked on three sides by mountains and can only face south. It could be quite useful, however, if we interpret the sites south of this area near the Lusagyugh reservoir and westward towards the SE corner of Mt Aragats as part of a rival community.
