Narrative

I left today significantly more convinced that my flat stones are in fact a burial. As we continued to excavate the surrounding loci it became clear that these stones did continue to go down in depth. The composition of these feature (now termed locus 55) is looking increasingly more like a miniature version of locus 22. While it is unclear if this is a subterranean construction or standing atop bedrock -- this will be explored in the next few days. What I did find that was another good indication was human bones in locus 54, the context right up against the northeast corner of wall (locus) 27 as well as in locus 52, the context immediately surrounded the burial. I assigned these human remains two different loci given the starkly different soil matrix they are situated in. Of interest, the bones in locus 54, immediately north of locus 22 are bigger in size whereas those in locus 55 seem to belong to a much smaller individual. It seems possible that those associated with locus 54 (termed locus 56) belong to the individuals in locus 22 -- of whom we had very few elements -- and those in locus 52 (termed locus 57) may be associated with locus 55.
