Narrative

The survey team spent to majority of our day working at Dzoraglukh 2, possible "Khaznakar," a large kurgan cluster NE of Dzoraglukh. After driving and hiking up the drainage west of the site's hill, we encountered a field of large kurgans at its northern edge, in two general N-S lines. They ranged between 8 and 25m in diameter. Several featured "vaulted," "corbel arch" roofs and extremely large, unfilled chambers that extended up to 80 or 90% of the diameter. We took points, pictures, videos, and drone ortho imagery, counting approximately 14 burials visible on the surface. Many of the chambers appeared collapsed inward, but because the masonry was so tight and the chambers unfilled, it was difficult to assess whether any had been looted. Several were simply slumped inward and untouched. This was an incredibly impressive and substantial cluster!

We also identified a settlement directly south and above the kurgans, consisting of curvilinear and rectilinear rooms, 3-4m in length. While we collected some obsidian from this area, no other material was present.

Finally, we recorded our final Aparan city historical cemetery at the end of the day, just below Aida's house on our road. There, we observed and photographed the 18-20th century burials, which have been moderately impacted but construction of contemporary tombs.
