Narrative

Week 4, Day 3. Today we centered our attention at Mirak, where we used the GNSS equipment to mark the points surrounding the hill fort that will be used for later mapping purposes. However, two points did not come through because the bay station battery went down and did not record properly, so these will have to be retaken tomorrow.

We assisted with Salpi's trench at Mirak, Locus 6, where I removed part of the soil on the outer face of the wall. My objective for today was to dig until I hit bedrock, which would confirm the true depth of the wall. I dug through several pockets of disintegrated basalt but did not reach the bedrock, but I imagine it would be only a matter of centimeters from where I stopped. Also, I found some animal bone fragments and ceramic sherds that were agreed to be LB. In my opinion, I feel that this trench should extend in a southeasterly direction, away from the corner of the wall, to verify its continuation that would ultimately form a room. There are single stones forming what would be considered a wall directly outside the locus, parallel to the wall in the trench, but they rest above the top of the wall, so it is not clear if they are part of the same architecture or that it points to a consistent rebuilding over time.
