Narrative

Today we spent the morning ground truthing a few final points in and around Aragats village. We looked for thee kurgans that had been recorded on the soviet topo maps as well as the monuments list, however we were unable to find them. It seems most likely that all three kurgans were fell victim to amelioration. While some part of them may still be intact, they were no longer visible on the surface. Next, we visited a medieval settlement visible on the Pleiades maps. It is possible that this is the village of Khrbek. We recorded a point, collected surface sherds and part of a ground stone from the site. Later in the day we completed two kilometer-long transects in the Ar/Ag quadrant. Transect 46 ran South and covered a kilometer just a bit east of the fortress of Berdichainer. It started in the gorge just north of the fortress and stretched one Km south. Along this transect I recorded a terrace wall made of small stones and standing to a few courses. A little further along I recorded a small anti-erosion wall below a road. Then I recorded the ‘castle’ structure just below the fortress that was already know to us. This rectilinear building has several room blocks and 1-1.5-meter-wide walls. Below the fortress on the slope I collected two artifact scatters. One was just below the fortress and one was near the base of the slope. Both collections were among cuts in the eroded side of the hill. The pottery seems, overall, to be later in date (at least Iron Age). At the very end of this transect I collected an artifact scatter of obsidian flakes. Transect 47 was just West of 46 and stretched 1km back north. My transect cut directly through the fortress and ended at the gorge where we had started. Near the middle of the transect I recorded an artifact scatter including sherds and obsidian, mostly turned up from burrowing activity. Nearby there was also a cement cistern I recorded. Just before I reached the fortress, on the slope opposite from it to the south, I recorded a field division wall that is likely modern. The transect cut through the fortress but there was nothing new to record. Tomorrow, we are hoping to take a number of soil samples from Mirak for optical luminescence dating.
