Alright week one of excavation and I'm already behind on journal-ing! This could mean I am either already super busy or just jetlagged and hangry when we return from the field. Probably a combination of both.
To recap what has happened the past few days ... I continued to explore anomalies from the 2016 GPR and 2017 mag surveys. I began with the mag data on the southwestern slope. I opened operations T43, a 5m x 2m unit, which was thought to contain a linear anomaly. After about a day and a half of work and a meter plus of soil removal we found nothing but a few stones (in no apparent order). Our coordinates for the mag data were not exact, but after this one expedition to unknown lands (or really land of terrace walls) we decided that we would return to the western slope.
After a bit of confusion, Lori and I opened T44. In the absence of the GNSS we followed Adam's directions from the SE corner of T39. Fortunately -- whether the "true" area or not -- we uncovered what appears to be the beginnings of a wall. Highlights of the day include a beautiful blue bead. We will see what tomorrow brings but I am hopeful that this operation will give us greater understanding of how the area between T38 and T39 and the citadel was utilized -- preferably during the Early Bronze Age.
