July 5, 2018. Today I cleaned the skull of Burial 01. The skull was fragmented in situ and during excavation, but held together by the clay soil matrix. It was extrordinarily vexing to see the small bones in correct anatomical location to each other but realize that they were not attached by bone and that they would fall apart as I cleaned. I also discovered that calcite covered much of the skull, particularly thick on some of the endocranial surfaces. I procured a vinegar that is 10% acetic acid to work on the calcite later.
In the afternoon I began sorting the remains into anatomical order and siding (or in some cases attemping to side) small bones and fragments.
