Today we initiated an extension in T46 (1 m along the W side of the trench) in order to expand the excavation surface and trace W1 (locus 2) towards NW.
The topsoil is rather thin in the NW portion of the trench as it directly lays on bedrock. The identified stone wall (W1) then appears to be laid directly on bedrock in its NW and SE portions, with three stone courses in its central section arranged against bedrock. This suggests that Wall 1 may have been built as a terrace wall partially exploiting the stability of natural bedrock in this area of the settlement. The density of materials is considerably higher in the fills excavated along the W facade of Wall 1 (supposedly "internal" areas?). Small finds from these loci include three andiron fragments typical of the EB I at Gegharot and the pottery appears to be exclusively EB. So far no floor level has been unambiguously identified in association with W1. We first hypothesised that locus 11 may represent the floor linked to the stone structure. However, no materials in situ have been identified and the matrix and thickness of the layer tends to favour its description as a simple fill against the terrace system.
By the end of the day a group of stones emerged in the SW corner of the extension, which suggests the presence of a second stone wall parallel to Stone W.
