Narrative

Continuing to work in both A and B. In A, we are looking for more beams in the tan ash layer. In B, we are continuing with B11, which was the topsoil and wash in the south extension. We have hit the light orange clay seen in the other parts of this extension, and we have found the other half of the pit (B10). This time we excavated the pit, which was very shallow. (I think we probably tore a fair amount of it out when we removed the topsoil, because we had to stand on it and they dumped their backdirt on it and then shoveled it out.) Anyway, the pit is grey-green clay in the orange matrix, and it did not contain very much material - a mandible and half of a grinding stone were the notable items in there. Took 2 soil samples from the pit, although it is probably very close to pure clay - one frm the top (which is probably more like the middle) and one from the bottom. At this point, the main part of the trench (which was B5) and the northern half of the eastern extension (which was B8) are at the same level, and I changed loci to take both of them down together - so now this area will be B12. (just to be redundant, the majority of B12 is still tan and full of charcoal - the matrix is no different than that in B5 - I just needed to expand the area) Found some beams in B12, just as we did in B5, but they are much smaller than those in A - maybe 5-8 cm wide and much shorter. They are also not anywhere near as well-preserved, so there were not given separate loci. The tan level still does not reach the east or north baulk.
