Today we are working in A and in the eastern extension of B. In the morning, I had everyone in A cleaning and then removing the wall fall (A2) in which we are still stuck. We have found the bottom layer of stones though, which is heartening. It is clear that the rocks fell upon a completely different matrix than the one embedded between them -- the stones seal a level of very soft, tan ashy material with lots of charcoal in it. Above this tan ashy material is a medium to dark brown, coarse material, so the contrast is very apparent. Will take out the rest of the rocks and change loci. Once the rocks were removed, began A3, which is marked by the tan ashy deposit. It is clear that this level, although found first in the NW corner, extends south. However, we have nto found it in the NE corner yet. Remember that this is the corner that was severely depressed from the outset - it may simply be at a lower elevation in this corner. In B, we are continuing to go down in the eastern extension. The rocks found yesterday in B8 were cleaned and removed today - definitely fall. This area is now down to the current level of B5, although eventually it will fall somewhere in the middle of that locus. We began B9, which is the part of the extension that should have been behind the wall that wasn?t actually there. This is still wash - medium brown at the root level, but a slightly lighter brown clay (very wet and sticky and messy) is beneath it. Still producing a lot of bone from this area behind the non-wall. We came down upon a light orange patch - didnt know what it was so I got Belinda. She said that both she and Armine have it, and I should just clean it and see if I can trace it. Turns out that this orange clay is an actual level - not just a localized spot. In the south baulk in this area (B9) there is a clear, very thin tan layer sandwiched between 2 layers of brown clay. It looks like it may have been a pit, but without any depth. I didn?t see anything at all when we dug through it, so maybe it was just a localized lense. However, we found a very clear pit beneath this funny pit-thing in the section. Assigned locus B10, it is a greyish green clay set into the light orange clay - the contrast is very nice and it make a good photo. We only have half of the pit, b/c the other half goes into the south baulk. We took an elevation and then added another extension to the trench. This one extends the south baulk back further, to the bedrock (which makes it impossible to draw accurately) and should expose the other half of the pit.
