6/22/06 Started the day working in locus 8 of WSH, bringing this locus down to the level of locus 6 and 7. Also, created a new locus roughly in the area of locus 6, which I designated locus 9. This locus is marked by a packed light brown silt matrix with a few clay lenses and specks of charcoal. Collected the first charcoal samples of the season today, from locus 8 and 9. Material quantities in locus 8 were extremely high, with 8 bags of ceramics and 5 bags of bone. Locus 9 had lower material quantities than locus 6 above it. I am wondering whether we are coming down on a floor in the area of locus 9. An obsidian point was found today in the screen of locus 9, in addition to an obsidian blade in locus 8. Two other new loci were created today, 10 and 11. These were located in the west corner of the trench, just west of the corner of the southwest wall. Locus 10 was marked by a dark brown silt (just below topsoil), while locus 11 is the lighter brown silt, similar to that of locus 6. A spindle whorl was found in locus 11. Maureen was out sick today, so I spent part of the day at the cromlech, monitoring how her workers were doing with the removal of topsoil.
