Narrative

We were able to make significant progress today in both operations AB1 and AB2. In AB1 we continued to clean the 2006 excavations, moving on from the wall to the bedrock/stone floor. The floor consists mostly of bedrock, but flat stones are also installed in many places to level the surface. The entire floor is slanted to the northwest, however, and it appears that many of the stones we thought were floor stones last year are in fact wall fall accumulated towards the lower reaches of the trench. Amongst this wall fall we established locus 13, took a C14 sample, and found an in situ ceramic which we haven't pulled yet--it appears to be LB. Other material frequncies from this locus are very low. We covered locus 13 with plastic and backdirt and will revisit excavating it when the rest of the trench is down to the same level. In AB2 we reached the terrace's rockier second level on the southern side of the trench),leveled the entire trench, and prepared to begin locus 2 tomorrow, as the southern, rocky, half. The northern trench half is still rather loamy, but we'll combine them again if the northern half becomes as rocky as the southern. We had two small finds from AB2 locus 1 today: a projectile point tip (1.L.1) and a bronze fish hook (1.M.1). Object frequencies increased signficantly as we encountered the beginning of the rockier stratum.
