6.29.06 In T19, Vahai, Arman, and Razmik uncovered more rocks today, which I dutifully drew. They also found an obsidian tool, and a number of sizeable ceramic sherds. The soil in the western 1/4 or 1/5 of the trench is beginning to get lighter, though still clearly wash, so we re-focused their attention on the rocks and the middle 1/3 of the trench. In T16, Avo, Grigor, and Haik continued to take down the lighter soil matrix in the eastern 1/2 of Locus 114. We found part of an unidentified cranium (animal? human? our very first ancestor?), but little other material. We uncovered a darker, more mottled matrix along the western edge of the trench that also continues up to the west side of the possible 'pit' on the northern baulk. The 'pit' is surrounded by rocks, but it's still pretty unclear as to whether it is a pit and has boundaries. However, the soil is so much more clay-ey and darker (and organic--lots of roots in this area) that surely something must be interesting there. Right?
