The last few days have involved defining the extent of the orange clay layer that we take to be bedrock. Today we discovered that in the center of the trench was a pit with a soft clay matrix, lots of animal bones, moderate ceramics and obsidian, and an interesting antler tool. It is difficult to define the chronology of the pit but a number of ceramics are quite late though there are also pieces of LBA wares as well. We are nearing the bottom of the pit and will likely finish it tomorrow. But we have also located an area where the orange clay does not extend. In the east corner of the trench, behind a couple of stones, we have found blackened earth rather than the clay. We must consider how to continue excavations here. The large whole vessel that we took from locus 3, seems to have been at the top edge of this pit. In the packed clay layer, the matrix seems to be wquite well packed but with significant sized inclusions.
