Narrative

7/22/2006 It was a pleasant and busy day at Tsaghkahovit today. The 15 workers are working well together, and with three trenches open, there's more than enough work for all of them. There were two main efforts in WSH today. First, we took down locus 16 and brought the north corner down to the same level as the floor of locus 18. In this area on the floor we found more of the in situ oven (I think) that was first encountered at the bottom of locus 15, just slightly to the east of locus 16. Photos were taken. Two charcoal samples were collected from the immediate area around this oven. In WSH, I also decided to try and define the north corner of the room. To this end, we removed the topspoil of a one meter extension, locus 21, which extends to the north, northwest. Also, today I began troweling around and then removing the pile of rocks in the middle of this operation. It turns out that we haven't reached the floor across the entirety of this room. There matrix around and below these rocks is a dark brown silt. I suspect there is a large pit at the center of the room, and that the rocks are covering this pit, but despite extensive troweling all day I still haven't found any of the edges of this pit or feature. This area will be locus 22. So as of now, the situation with the floor and the center of this room remains uncertain. WSH and WSG were less eventful today. In the former, we continued to excavate and screen locus 9 while in the latter we continued to excavate locus 5. I also focused my attention today on the area of the southeast wall of WSH, locus 6, with two people troweling on top of the wall to define the architecture. It seems as though there's a doorway leading out of room I, through the southwest wall, towards the west, however this passageway appears to be closed off by another series of rocks. Will continue troweling in this area tomorrow, in search of the door and some clarity.
