Narrative

Weather this morning was surprisingly cloudy and cool. We began by finishing the last portions of cleaning in locus E663 (south of the locus E662 wall/tomb) and locus E631, the western side of wall E661 in the southern half of T2E. We quickly reached bedrock throughout E663, exposing the bottom of the possible tomb door stone. In locus E631 it was impossible to reach bedrock in the surprisingly deep SW corner (without expanding the excavation) and we left this work to future efforts. The rest of the locus, however, quickly bottomed out at granite bedrock. With these loci closed we began work across the E609 wall in the northern portion of the trench, west of the E661 wall (locus E658). Several passes throughout the day continued to produce the low material densities and plentiful granite pockets common throughout previous work in this silty loam locus. An additional course of stones in the E661 wall was also opened. In trench south we opened locus E664, a 50cm x 4m cut roughly east of the possible tomb, but higher in the extant baulk under the locus E618 EB floor. This work produced only 5 sherds during the day and consisted of the orange silty sand commonly located beneath the late EB deposits.
