7.26.06 Today we finished the trenchettes, within an hour or so of beginning work--much faster than the end of the day that I had predicted! So the totals: 7 paused due to depth (WSKa, WSKb, WSKc, WSKd, WSKj, WSKk, WSKs); 8 bottomed out of bedrock (WSKe, WSKf, WSKg, WSKi, WSKm, WSKn, WSKo, WSKq); 5 with a clay surface (WSKh, WSKl, WSKp, WSKr, WSKt). The trenchettes with a clay surface at the bottom are scattered enough to suggest that we might find the surface if we pushed past a meter in the trenchettes that we have paused. However, as mentioned in a previous journal entry, it became increasingly difficult to dig past a meter, so we have decided to redistribute the labor at that point. Overall, this experiment has been successful in showing that we have low material densities in this room, and also that there are some interesting features that could bear further investigation at some other time. The interesting features include the wall in WSKb, which is near an opening in the next room to the south, and also the rocks in WSKo, which may also be architecture. We spent the rest of the day cleaning WSC2 and removing topsoil from WSC3.
