8/10/06 I spent the day at Tsilkar today, finishing operation Tl.01 which Belinda had started. We continued to excavate locus 6, the area alongside the wall, until we had passed the bottom of the wall by 20-30cm. At this point I decided to stop. The material quantities were extremely low, with less than 5 sherds found and a couple of small bones. The matrix was a sandy silt, notably sandier, incidentally, than Tsaghkahovit soils. After reaching a depth of over 2 meters in the northern area, I photographed the wall and the trench, drew the section, and filled in the trench. All in all, a fairly uneventful excavation. In the process of backfilling, we came upon a skull just beneath topsoil in an area adjacent to the trench. It's very likely that we're dealing with a cemetary in this area. Very difficult to date the burials given the absence of ceramics. And although we encountered a floor surface, it's probably later than the wall given that the wall continued for several courses below it. Despite the low material quantities in the trench, we were able to collect for bags of surface pottery. Meanwhile, Elizabeth managed the work at Tsaghkahovit today. It seems that WSH locus 30 was finished, while work continued in WSI locus 19. A nearly complete hand-made small bowl was found in this locus. Finally, a small team of workers excavated the southwest wall of WSG, in preparation for Hasmik and for final photos.
