8.21.06 It was a difficult and depressing day in the field today. We arrived in the morning to find all of the rooms vandalized. The damage is spelled out in my notebook, and will not be transcribed here. In short, we suspect that Russian officers may have been responsible for the damage, and had a confrontation with two officers at the end of the day. This conversation is also detailed in my notebook. Archaeologically, work proceeded today in WSC3 and WSI. In WSC3 we closed locus 8 and created a new locus, locus 9, to cover the more clayish matrix adjacent to locus 8, towards the southeast, i.e. alongside the southeast wall. In WSI, we continued to excavate locus 32, which expanded by two meters to the southwest. In the process of excavating this locus, a roundish, ashy clay feature emerged in the east corner, which I designated locus 33. While troweling this locus it began to rain and hail. We waited in the car for over an hour until it let up. Hasmik and Artur continued to work for a few hours.
