8/23/06 It was a busy day in the field today. When we arrived in the morning, the trenches were soaking wet from last night's rain, which meant we couldn't screen for most of the day. Work resumed at first in WSG locus 18 and locus 16, until Hasmik was ready to draw the room. At that point, energies shifted to WSI again, where we continued to take down locus 32 to the northwest. Also in this room, I worked in locus 6, the area above the southwest wall, and in locus 23, in preparation for final photos. In the course of working in locus 26, another stone of the northwest side of the doorway fell into the trench, but we managed to prop it back up. Also, while cleaning in this area I think I've identified the actual doorway out of room I, within the northwest wall. Here, there are two lines of worked stones visible on the top of the wall, which seem to be worked on their internal faces. Not sure if there's enough time to excavate this. Will decide tomorrow. In WSC3, we finished locus 9 and created a new locus, locus 10, to designate the strip of clayish silt along the southwest wall. By the end locus 10 was also completed. At this point, we seem to be very nearly upon the floor across the entirely of WSC3, with the exception of the northeast side. Will take that area down tomorrow. A broken groundstone and a C14 sample were found in locus 10. Finally, the mayor and chief of police visited the site today to inspect the damage from the vandalism. I gave them a tour of the west settlement and took them to see the burials as well.
