Narrative

2008.6.29. Sunday-Vardavor. we are uncovering the rest of the plastic - covered LB floor. when the plastic is removed, we will take the whole floor down together-- but first the whole floor of the trench must be taken down several centimeters at least. the dirt in the floor of the trench was consolidated by last nights rain, and is difficult to dig quickly. I am trying to get the workers to uncover a single layer in one direction-- supposedly helped in this case by the appearrance of a a new, greasy gray clay soil which we will not penetrate today but which signifies the clay lying just above the floor, hopefully. ATS investigated the area of rockfall (part of locus 106) in the north center of the trench, coming up with some EB sherds from between the stones. I took a C14 sample fom the corner of the floor where it intersects (still unclear) the bedrock outcrop under the wall's easternmost extent. It was big enough to have a visible grain-- hwever, later in the day a worker found string- wrapped stone, probably from mapping in 2006, in the near vicinity of where the sample was taken, so i am not sure how secure this context is. we also today removed some missed preservation- stones from the wall at the case of the trench. once the floor had been mroe- or- less leveled, we began dismantling the available/movable rocks from the NE rockfall. our work today was sporadic, due to the need to share the wheelbarrrow with Sanvel's trench. but we moved a fair amount of dirt, and re- uncovered (from yesterday PM) a very interesting section of pot- shoulder, with a running design band and a human figure which appears to be stabbed in the side with a shard of imbedded obsidian. We started lifting the plastic where it had become messy, and during a break i chased the grey clay with a shovel as far to the NW as i could given the limited soil- removal capabilities. I also added a new locus today-- 107, which is the dark-gray0to-brown loose soil lying on top of the gray clay/proto- floor. the pot shoulder was lying in this matrix, for instance. i kept the artifacts from this locus separate from those which started to emerge as the wall was dismantled. I am going to try to link up 107 with the last or commensurate locus from 2006. Also, i started a more accurate sketch of the trench, which i will try to finish tomorrow and fill in with all relevant elevations. ktesnenk'.
