2008-07-03. Thursday. Today I split the workers up and had them working in diferent loci, with some success. The main problem arose from trying to determine who at any given time will carry the nasilki to the dirtpile. Seyran finished straightening locus 107-- no new gloor emerged so i am going to stick with this designation for the bones and sherds recovered. another worker slowly excavated with pick and then trowel in the stones, fill and trashdirt at the intersection of west walls, floor and the north baulk-- i am designating this locus 110, to avoid mixing or confusing loci (though having four loci open at once today was a little hectic). Locus 110 is lower than the floor, and was lined in plastic from 2006. I will measure the exact dimensions of this locus tomorrow-- at which time i will also need to record more fully the new loci and feature in the western end of the trench. below (but not under) the center stones in the westernmost wall, we have uncovered a hearthlike burning feature. this consists of large outwardly- fragmented sherds, variously trowelable or hard- baked clay (with lots of acive bioturbation), chunks of burned orange clay and flecks of charcoal (i took a good c14 sample from here at elevation 2211.79 masl). on the advice of ATS, i split the west end into two loci (108 and 109) and set workers to taking down the westernmost (109) with shovel and handpick-- this area had been slightly overdug yesterday... In the afternoon i had another worker start to take down the western part of 103-- this had been cleaned by EGAF but needs to be taken down to bedrock if possible. tomorrow i will continue to trowel down 108, and i will try to keep everyone busy in the other loci.
